Simon Tien’s Philosophy and Working Background
My professional background consists of a wide variety of professional qualifications in both health and sports coaching. Reflecting on my professional philosophy, I am driven to strive for success. I believe that all aspects of my sporting background, paramedic experience, academic pursuits and business ventures are all complementary of a combined constitution of wanting to help people and share my beliefs of mind and body control to aid in everyday life function (Castillo, 2020). Valuing excellence, leadership, efficacy, and professionalism is something I bring to my work practice and insights.
My working background consists of ten years of extensive emergency service training and background as an emergency service officer in remote mines in Western Australia. Also, I’ve spent two years as a registered paramedic and volunteer ambulance officer and twenty years as a surfing instructor. Another venture I have participated in is the creation of Floating Euphoria. A successful business in flotation and wellness in the Margaret River Region, offering sensory deprivation, massage and holistic therapies. I recently purchased a surf school in Margaret River and rebranded the Margaret River Surfing Academy business.
Beliefs, Values, Ethics and Personal and Professional Development
I approach life with enthusiasm and drive. Individuals can explain their motivations and behaviour with values; they play an essential role in sociology, psychology, and the anthropology of life (Belic et al., 2021). These values and beliefs of achievement, stimulation, self-direction and security follow the (1992) Schwartz theory of fundamental importance, driving my motivation (Belic et al., 2021). I value my health, well-being, and family, which I feel flows into my work. Having a healthy diet and regular exercise means that I am mentally and physically strong enough to achieve my goals personally and professionally. My happiness influences the direction of my profession. If my joy has ever dwindled in a particular position, I find the means to seek change and evolve to where I feel comfortable and driven.
I am ethically driven to work hard and achieve to provide a prosperous environment for my family to live comfortably without financial stress or burden. My career began in 2000 when I started to teach surfing for a job. Professional surfer Josh Palmateer employed me as head coach for his surf school. I completed my bronze medallion in surf lifesaving and still to this day hold this qualification. Teaching surfing was a lifestyle job. I soon realised that without owning the business, I would not achieve financial stability, so I completed my Paramedic degree and entered the Western Australian mining boom in search of finance and achievement. I started a wellness centre, Floating Euphoria, during this time, learning mindfulness and relaxation. The combination of wellness and paramedicine has inspired me to progress in my academic learning and move into the mental health sector.
My professional statement is simple:
To progress my academic and personal learnings to the aid of the wider community and children
To associate the mental health benefits of surfing for everyone to experience through simple explanation, positive experience.
Empower individuals with the skills and knowledge to identify and control their mental health through technique, lifestyle and diet via education and explanation
To be the difference I desire
