Identifying problem solving
You needn’t look far to understand the need for mental health awareness for our adolescent children in Australia. There is growing evidence of a pandemic of mental health cases worldwide that requires attention from health professionals, and I intend to use my knowledge to help this need. Garacia-Carrion et al. (2019) document the time, as a critical priority for intervention in mental health for children and adolescents through schools and communities, with statistics worldwide showing up to twenty per cent not receiving specialised care.
With the recent purchase of the Margaret River Surfing Academy, I have discovered a passion I would like to pursue in providing this education to the school students and adults attending our business. Currently, we service around fifteen to twenty schools across Western Australia and teach surfing to many different demographics. . Through life experience and consultation with teachers, children and my current studies, I have identified the need for intervention and explanation for the following:
Evidenced-based psychoeducation on mental health, group communication skills and understanding of emotions
Student mentoring through discussion and participation
Group participation and confidence in socialising with others
To increase enjoyment and trust in and around the ocean and outdoors as a path to normality post covid, promoting a sporting activity that provides social distancing and social interaction in a group activity in a low transmission environment
Provide psychoeducation to adolescents and a link between thoughts, feelings and behaviours and communication skills to strengthen relationships
Skill training through group activities.
Awareness of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and how to identify stress and techniques to promote calmness.
Provide knowledge of surfing and ocean safety.
Discuss and encourage self-determination in the face of challenges. Discuss how to be calm in situations that may be out of your control, including nurturing confidence in an ocean environment.
Create and practice activities on open discussions between the group on how to discover mindfulness and practice presence.
Diet and physical activity awareness and benefits.
How to increase awareness of your emotions.
Develop confidence in the ocean through a program aimed at the success of every participant creating a sense of achievement and comradery.
Harness a deep sense of pride in achievement
Anxiety for exams and techniques on how to relax and calm in these situations
How to approach conversations with friends who are depressed or people who are
Family issues at home, how to discuss with a friend or who can help you if this is happening
Talk groups- how to create one or instigate one at your school. Learn how to start them and how to choose how you want them to run
These are just to name a few. What do you think is the current need within mental health and general well-being?
